Some of these came out earlier, but since i’m not a professional music listener i don’t always hear stuff the moment it comes out. I’ll try and add Bandcamp-links and/or music videos where possible. You can also just copy/paste the artist and title in your streamingprovider/musicoutlet of choice, or print the list and go to your local recordstore. You’re an adult. You got this.

In order of vibe:

NEW THIS MONTH
#

  • Power Snatch - HOLE IN THE CEILING
    #

    rock
    alternative
    indie

Surprise! Hayley Williams’ new band surprise-dropped a 3-track EP a day after being snubbed in 4 categories at the grammy’s. I guess she’s working towards next year’s win.

  • Ronker - No Sweat
    #

    rock ’n’ roll
    metal
    noise

This answers the question nobody dared to ask: what if Idles and Refused formed a superband. This may come over as an unfair comparison, as Ronker very much brings their own thing to the table. The entire album is definitely up to snuff, yet this song stands out to me, as it makes me feel things. Mostly anger. I also believe you can hear some Monty Python-esque horses in the background throughout, you are now unable to unhear them. No further notes.

  • Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean - An Adornment of Light
    #

    metal
    sludge
    doom

The bandname comes from the Thou-song bearing the same name, and it’s easy to hear why. For fans of Thou (as they obviously are), Eyehategod, The Body, and Grief.

    The Olympians - Honey Bea
    #

    soul
    cinematic
    funk

It has been 10 years since Toby Pazner’s The Olympians’ last album, and even if it probably won’t be as impactful as The olympians’ self-titled debut record, the next chapter once again re-defines what modern soul should/could sound like. This is the last song of the album, but I implore you to listen to it in full.

  • Angine de Poitrine - Fabienk
    #

    prog
    disco
    funk

Québec based funkyprogmathrock duo Angine de Poitrine is the perfect kind of weird. Anonymously donning papier-mache masks and polka dotted clothes and backdrop, they looppedal their way through an almost ethereal experience. I hope to see them live sometime soon.

The video below is the entire KEXP live session marked at the song in question, but please (if you have the time) check it out in it’s entirety. It’s definitely worth it.

  • Vorso - you have been swapped!!
    #

    electronic
    glitch
    bass

New Vorso! and he seem to have brought all his bleeps and bloops along with him. Too bad he didn’t brought his accordion.

  • Nørbak - Chuva
    #

    electronic
    techno
    elektro

Techno-time! Portugal based and Belgian released Nørbak gives us this textured pitch-based warm techno track. The entire EP bearing the same name deserves a listen.

  • Dom & Kemal - The Seed
    #

    electronic
    drum and bass
    low end

Friendship ended with Roland, now Kemal is my best friend. Dom & Roland has nothing to prove, sitting on a multiple decade-spanning body of work and a career ripe with genre defining tracks, I truly believe he made this EP for himself just to get some creative studio-time with his buddies. I also believe this is 75% a Kemal track. This is S-tier Drum And Bass.

  • Mandy, Indiana - Cursive
    #

    electronic
    noise-rock, I guess?
this is a genre on its own

Mandy, Indiana’s latest imprint is a more pollished album from a band known for grittyness and chaos. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still rough around the edges by design. Drums: stabby, Vocals: French, Synths: Yes. Let’s go.

They have singlehandedly ended the war (or opened a new front) on video aspect ratios with their videoclip:

NEW TO ME
#

  • Horse Lords & Arnold Dreyblatt - Extended Field
    #

    rock
    experimental
    jamband

If i’d heard this blind, i would swear this was Sons of Kemet doing a one-of experimental-ish toned-down concept album. I love this. I’ve heard of both artists in passing, but I guess i have some deep-diving to do. This is my favourite discovery of the month, and it’s not even close.

  • Flea - A Plea
    #

    jazz
    afrobeat
    spoken word

Holy shit. I only knew Flea as part of RHCP. But this is something else. Be sure to watch the videoclip! Can’t wait for the rest of the album. Also: He should colab with Andre 3000 (ANDRÉ-FLEA-THOUSAND, you can use this in exchange for a mention in the booklet.).

  • Playboy Manbaby - Criminals
    #

    punk
    punk
    punk

“Spend seven thousand dollars on a self-defense class to protect the seven dollars in your wallet.” The first sentence of the song sets the tone for this very punk (in sound and heart) song by Phoenician band Playboy Manbaby. The accompaying videoclip is “chef’s kiss”.

  • Tom Finster - Empty Skies and Full Hearts
    #

    electronic
    drum & bass
    minimal

I somehow missed a new Tom Finster song last year as part of the excellent Epitome II compilation on Overview records. He never misses, Year of I was a triumph, and I hope he’s working on a new full-length

  • Kettama - Bōsōzoku
    #

    electronic
    techno
    housey

I’ve heard of Kettama in passing, but since I’ve bought tickets to go to the saturday of Pukkelpop I’ve started checking out who else is playing besides personal favorites Deftones (!),Dijon (!), Wet Leg, Amyl and the Sniffers, and Underworld. It’s an old song, but it checks out. (/StarWars)
